Gold Grains…
- The world leader in the recovery of fine gold grains, ODM proposed the industry-standard classification system used for variably transported grains (pristine, modified, reshaped).
- Every day, we recover and study hundreds of gold grains from sediment samples, especially glacial till and alluvial and beach gravels. Gold grains are also extracted from soil (even from humus samples) to explain geochemical anomalies found in soil surveys.
- The wear processes that reshape gold grains differ between sediments and produce distinct end-products. In till, the wear rate is steady and can be used to estimate the distance to the source mineralization. Specific bedrock sources of transported gold grains can be fingerprinted by scanning electron microscopy using crystal morphology, silver content and diagnostic mineral inclusions. New deposits can be identified in the dispersal shadows of known deposits. Lode sources can be identified from active gold placers.
